Reptile Education: Our Journey
Scaled Encounters began with a simple realization:
Some of the world’s most misunderstood animals can become some of its greatest teachers.
Founded in 2026 by active-duty U.S. Navy Chief Mike Foti, Scaled Encounters was built from a lifelong passion for reptiles and nearly two decades of leadership, mentorship, and service. Growing up with a fascination for wildlife and spending years caring for and working with reptiles, Mike saw firsthand how fear and misunderstanding often shape the way people view these incredible animals.
Time and time again, he witnessed what happened when people were given the opportunity to ask questions, learn the facts, and safely interact with reptiles for themselves. Fear turned into curiosity. Curiosity turned into appreciation.
What started as a personal passion evolved into a mission: to create meaningful educational experiences that inspire confidence, encourage respect for wildlife, and help people discover the beauty and importance of reptiles through hands-on learning.
Now, as a Master Herpetologist, Scaled Encounters is dedicated to bringing professional reptile education to schools, libraries, camps, homeschool groups, and community events throughout Virginia. While our story is just beginning, our purpose remains constant: To help people see beyond the myths, embrace curiosity, and discover that understanding has the power to transform fear into fascination. Because every encounter has the potential to change a perspective—and sometimes even a life.
